Built by Bristol Corporation and brought online in 1929, Portishead Power Station was a major upgrade in the region's supply capacity. Electricity was fast overtaking gas and steam as means to light and power the city and demand was soaring.
It reinvigorated the Victorian docks by giving them new purpose importing coal, mainly from South Wales, though it's main source of fuel was the North Somerset Coal fields. With their closure, the plant was converted to oil in 1974, but the spiralling cost during the OPEC crisis made it expensive to run and it was gradually wound down until closure of the first plant in 1976 and the last plant in 1982.
It was demolished incrementally between 1981 and 1992. Some parts were salvaged and are on display at the Museum of Electricity in Redland, Bristol.
