FIGS , PROVIDENCE and SILENCE

The retail season for ripe figs is over in this part of the southeastern USA. It's short. So on Friday 26th and Saturday 27th I gorged on them. I paid a price. This reminded me of a Bar Mitzvah I attended in Atlanta many years ago. Young Benjamin's Hebrew passage was about the biblical injunction to gather only enough Manna for one day. (Except on the day before Shabbat) "Why?" pondered Benjamin. He figured out this: " Too much of even a good thing can be bad for you". WOW what an insight from a thirteen year old lad! Too much of even a good thing? Did this include my fig gorge? YOU BET Thanks The Providence of too many Figs was delightfully serendipitous! The Providence of this day led me to embrace silence all day long. No chit chats. No conversations The presence of the Holy One The silence led me this way. I am not very important!

This day has included much silence, by my choice and plan. Slow cooking contributes to a sabbath type day. 'Tis the Delicata Squash season. So my dinner had no more and no less than this; my favourite squash. Cut in the middle by length. Remove the seeds (an ice cream scoop helps). Cook both halves in a baking pan, with about 1" of water to sustain moisture. Season the flesh according to your instincts Bake at 350f for an hour or so. The flesh will be moist and tender. Indulge yourself by putting some butter or honey in the trough. The flesh will be tasty. The skin will be tender enough to eat. So say I

5:30 a.m. you say. Why in the blazes were you in a 7/11 at that time? 'Tis simple. The honourable Mr. Cooper and I have a 5:00 a.m. poop walk at either Arlington Park or Payne Park. It was Payne Park yesterday and I had stopped to buy coffee. He stood in front of me bearing that beaten down look. His card didn't have a decent balance. He pressed deeply into the left hand pocket of his sweat pants, hoping against hope that money had magically been placed there. I tapped his shoulder and gave him His purchases were for about $7.88. I waited for my change, "Wait a minute" I thought, "It's not my change it's his, given by me as part of the original $10 without terms and conditions". It was a gift! He paid it forward, placing it in that dish from which others can draw should they have a temporary cash shortage. HE PAID IT FORWARD! yesterday and I had stopped yesterday yresterday

On the left is Coco. It's his second visit to the 17th Street Park. He is a matter of months old. He is/could be a Czech type Shepherd Dog. We met this afternoon. Cooper took on Coco's play fight training. The young 'un was up to the task - in truth the FUN. Coco was as lively and engaged as he could be Ole Cooper Ole Coco

Cooper's Seizures and one which scared me.

I wasn't sure whether or not my dear Cooper was having seizures. During the first two I was tempted to judge that he was being a bit goofy (like the dogs which rest on its back and move as if they were running.) The third had me scared. Cooper was resting on his side. Then the seizure began. He paddled his legs for all they were worth. Then the foaming at the mouth began. 'Twas not a sight to be recorded. That seizure warranted a speedy visit to the Vet. It was made for 10:15 a.m. the next day ( Tuesday of this week) Oh, what marvelous place is the Animal Hospital (my vet practice, up in Ellenton, FL ) They were full of skill and loving kindness when Zion died. (That same skill and loving kindness was to the fore with Cooper yesterday). Blood tests taken yesterday; and with an analysis by mid-morning today brought some relief, There is no sign of Epilepsy. The good Dr. Sarah has prescribed a...
